How to Make a Walrus Mask

How to Make a Walrus Mask thumbnail
Children can create a walrus mask out of a paper plate.

Walruses come from the scientific order Pinnipedia. Students in elementary school will learn that a walrus has blubber to keep it warm, four flippers to help it get around and whiskers to help it find food at the bottom of the ocean. Once students understand a bit about walruses, they can create walrus masks and use them to act out a few walrus behaviors.

Instructions

    • 1

Give each child a paper plate and have her paint it brown.

    • 2

Instruct the students to cut out two eye holes near the top of the paper plate once the brown paint has dried.

    • 3

Draw a nose in the center of the paper plate with a permanent black marker.

    • 4

Tell the children to glue 15 to 20 2-inch pieces of brown yarn around the walrus's mouth to represent the whiskers.

    • 5

Cut a straw in half so that each student has two pieces. Have the students glue the straw pieces coming out from the whiskers to represent the tusks of the walrus.

    • 6

Punch a hole in the left and right side of each child's mask. Attach a 12-inch piece of yarn to each side so that the mask can be tied around the child's head.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you don't have any straws, you can cut tusks out of white construction paper.

  • Younger students should use safety scissors instead of regular scissors, as they could easily get cut if they are not careful.
