Corset wedding gowns give brides a streamlined silhouette.

When searching for a wedding gown, many brides select the streamlined corset gown. Not only do these gowns work to improve the bride's posture, but they also help her have a statuesque silhouette. Lace-up gowns also provide the wearer with a bit of leeway, just in case her weight happens to fluctuate before the wedding day. If you cannot seem to find your perfect wedding gown in ready-to-wear bridal shops, consider creating a frock yourself for a personal touch and the perfect fit. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Measure and record the circumferences of your bust, upper ribcage, waist and hips. Select a corset dress pattern that corresponds to your measurements. Though a corset is intended to cinch the waist in slightly, do not select a pattern with measurements too much smaller than your own, as this will put unnecessary strain on the fabric. If you cannot find a corset dress pattern, look instead for separates that you can sew together at the end of the project.

    • 2

Cut out the fabric pieces and pin them onto the dress fabric. Adhering to grainline recommendations is particularly important for the corset, as cutting a corset off the grain or on the bias will result in a stretchy corset. Cut two of the required pieces so you can make the gown's lining, too.

    • 3

Sew all the corset's necessary seams, keeping the right sides of the fabric together when sewing. Leave the back open, as this will be where the corset lacing lies. Repeat the seams for the lining and sew the gown's skirt together according to the pattern's instructions.

    • 4

Sew the boning to the wrong side of the corset's lining, keeping the strips parallel to the seams. The wrong side is the side with the seam selvages. Doing this prevents the boning's rough edges from touching your skin, making the corset more comfortable to wear.

    • 5

Sew the corset lining to the corset's outer face, keeping right sides together. Flip the lining to the inside to give the top a smooth finish.

    • 6

Sew the skirt to the corset, keeping right sides together. Finish the edges of the hem so they don't unravel and sew the hem in place.

    • 7

Distribute the eyelets down the back of the corset and top of the skirt with 12 on each side. Following the manufacturer's instructions, use the hand setting tool to slice appropriately sized holes at each point where an eyelet lies. After creating the holes, place both halves of an eyelet into the hand setting tool and hammer the two sides together, taking care that you don't hammer them out of shape. Repeat until all the eyelets are in place. Thread a ribbon through the eyelets to tighten the dress.
