Instructions

    • 1

Use the sculling draw most effectively from the center of the canoe. However, it can be used in the bow or the stern as well.

    • 2

Insert the paddle into the water about two feet from the canoe, or whatever feels comfortable.

    • 3

Rotate the blade of the paddle 45 degrees away from the canoe, so that the inside edge of the blade points to the bow of the canoe.

    • 4

Pull the paddle at an angle toward the side of the boat, in the direction of the stern.

    • 5

Rotate the blade 90 degrees at the end of the stroke, so the same face now has its inside edge pointing to the stern of the canoe. Allow the blade to extend away from the canoe as you rotate it. If you rotate correctly, it should naturally pull this way.

    • 6

Push the blade forward toward the bow of the canoe.

    • 7

Continue rotating, pulling and pushing so that the power-face of the blade makes a figure eight over and over. Each time the blade moves toward the canoe, it pulls the water under you and moves the canoe to the side you're paddling on.

Tips & Warnings

  • Reverse the angle of the blade on the sculling draw to execute a reverse sculling draw and move away from the paddling side. This is more difficult and should not be attempted until you've mastered a normal sculling draw.

  • The sculling draw is easier done than described. With a little practice, this technique can make you look like a master canoeist.

  • Always wear a life vest when canoeing.

  • If you have any condition that would impair or limit your ability to engage in physical activity, please consult a physician before attempting this activity.
