How to Get the New Message Layout on Facebook
In early 2011, Facebook introduced a new messaging layout designed to integrate text messaging, chat and email in one simple interface. Instead of treating messages as individual entities, the new layout consolidates messages from all three mediums into contact-specific conversations. In other words, all your test messages, chats and emails sent to a particular friend are displayed within a single message interface.

Sign in to your Facebook account.

Navigate to facebook.com/about/messages/.

Click "Request an Invitation." At the time of publication, Facebook is sending invites almost immediately to all users who are not yet using the new messages layout.

Tips & Warnings
Facebook friends who have access to the new messages layout can invite others. If the invitation is not working, consider asking a friend to invite you to upgrade.
