How to Add Yahoo! Email to Adium Instant Messenger

Adium is an open source instant messenger program available for Mac computers. With Adium, you can connect to and chat with instant messenger contacts from many popular instant messaging clients such as Google Talk, ICQ, MSN Messenger, AIM and Yahoo! Messenger. To chat with Yahoo! email users using Adium, you must have a Yahoo! account and must add the person you wish to chat with to your contacts list in Adium.

Instructions

Adding Yahoo! Account to Adium

1. Launch Adium instant messenger on your Mac.

2. Click on "Admin" in the file menu and select "Preferences." A new window will appear.

3. Click the "Account" tab and then click the "+" icon in the lower left corner of the window. A list of service providers will appear. Scroll down and select "Yahoo!"

4. Type in your Yahoo! username into the "Username" field. There is no need to add the "@yahoo.com" extension to the username.

5. Click "OK." Adium will attempt to connect to your Yahoo! account. Type in the password for your account when prompted. Mac OS saves the password to the Keychain once you've entered your account password into Adium.

Adding Yahoo! Contact

1. Launch Adium instant messenger on your Mac.

2. Click on "Contact" in the file menu then select "Add Contact." A pop-up window will appear.

3. Click the up and down arrows in the "Contact Type" section and select "Yahoo!"

4. Type in the screen name for the Yahoo! email user that you wish to add to Adium instant messenger into the "Screen Name" field. There is no need to add the "@yahoo.com" extension to the screen name.

5. Type in an optional alias for the screen name into the "Alias" field. The alias is the name that appears in your contacts list. For example, you can add the name "John" as a contact's alias so you know who that contact is.

6. Click "Add" in the lower-right corner of the window to add the contact to your list of contacts in Adium.
