How to Troubleshoot DOCSIS

Cable Internet transmissions occur within the same coaxial cable commonly used to distribute the cable television signal. Since all broadband data is transmitted separately from video channels, the equipment receiving the Internet-related data transmissions identify and transmit the information through a reserved or isolated channel. The governed inclusion of this separate addition is called the Data over Cable Service Interface Specification, or DOCSIS. What this means to troubleshooting is you can have a fully functional cable television service, but still have problems with the separate broadband signal. Properly troubleshooting your DOCSIS service involves a clean power cycle of all involved equipment.

Instructions

    • 1

Save and close your files and programs, then shutdown your computer. If you have a router on your network, unplug its power cord.

    • 2

Locate the coax cable connection behind the modem, and disconnect it while still leaving the power cord plugged in. Let the DOCSIS modem sit idle for three minutes, or until the "Online" or "Status" light disappears.

    • 3

Disconnect the DOCSIS cable modem's power cord from the outlet. Let your modem sit idle for at least one minute.

    • 4

Reconnect the coaxial cable to the DOCSIS modem, and then reconnect the power cord. Let the modem sit idle until the "Online" light appears.

    • 5

Reconnect the router's power if you have one, and then allow up to three minutes for it to establish a connection with your cable modem.

    • 6

Turn on your computer. If a problem persists with your DOCSIS cable modem, contact your cable provider to explain the problem and troubleshooting procedures you just performed.
