How to Make Crib Sheets
Sew your own fitted crib sheets using your favorite fabric. Making you own crib sheets saves you from buying fitted sheets from the store. The non-profit health organization First Candle recommends only placing a tight-fitting sheet in your baby's crib. Placing any other type of bedding inside the crib is discouraged, as it's a safety hazard and can cause your child to die from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.
Things You'll Need
- 68-by-45-inch fabric
- 4 9-inch pieces 3/4-inch elastic
- Scissors
- Tape measure
- Sewing machine
- Iron
- Pins

1
Wash and dry your fabric. This prevents the sheet from shrinking after it's sewn.
-
2
Fold the fabric in half lengthwise. Measure and cut an 8-by-8-inch square from each open corner. You should have two cut corners away from the fold, on the top and bottom of the fabric. Discard the four fabric squares or save them for another project.
-
-
3
Line up the two 8-inch corners so they form a right-angle. Using a sewing machine, sew them together using a straight stitch.
-
4
Turn the fabric piece over so all you can see is the backside. Fold the unfinished edges over onto the backside and iron the piece, doing your best to create a straight line. When the fabric lies flat and is easy to maneuver, sew a straight stitch.
-
5
Measure and cut four 9-inch pieces of 3/4-inch elastic.
-
6
Fold each elastic piece piece in half and pin it to the bottom of the corner seam you made in step 3. Stretch the elastic piece as far as you can along the entire length of the side or hemmed seam, pinning the elastic as you go.
-
7
Set your sewing machine to the "Stretch" or "Zig Zag" setting, then sew the pinned elastic to the fabric. Remove the pins as you go.
