How to Make a Link in a Tweet

How to Make a Link in a Tweet thumbnail
Share fun or interesting Web content by creating a link in your tweets.

If you spot an informative or entertaining Web page, you might want to tweet a link to your Twitter followers. Some Web pages have long Uniform Resource Locator addresses that can use most of the 140-character limit on tweets. Twitter has solved this problem by automatically shortening links. Create links on your tweets by pasting or typing the URL into your tweet. Twitter automatically detects the URL and turns it into a shortened link on the tweet.

Instructions

    • 1

      Sign in to Twitter.

    • 2

Click the "New Tweet" icon button to the left of your username in the menu at the top of the homepage.

    • 3

Type your message in the text input field. Paste or type the full URL of the Web page that you want to link to in the tweet. As you type or paste the URL address, Twitter displays a message to tell you that it will shorten the link. Continue to type the rest of the URL after you get this message.

    • 4

Click "Tweet" to send your message containing the link. The shortened link appears in the tweet with the "http://t.co" prefix.

Tips & Warnings

  • Always include a short description of the linked content in your Tweet so that your followers know what to expect when they click the link.
