How to Make a Connection on LinkedIn

LinkedIn is a social network designed for professional networking. Other social networks allow you to add friends; on LinkedIn, you add "connections." Connections are people you know, such as co-workers or classmates, or they can be people you are interested in knowing professionally. Connections are not instantaneous; the person to whom you are connecting won't be added to your connections until he accepts the invitation.

Instructions

    • 1

Navigate to the profile of the person to whom you want to connect after logging in to your LinkedIn account.

    • 2

Click the gold "Add to Network" button on the upper right-hand side of the person's profile.

    • 3

Select the option that indicates your relationship to the person. Options include colleague, classmate, business associate, friend and other.

    • 4

Include a note with your connection if you like, or leave the default note in the text box. If you don't know someone well, you may want to include a note explaining how you are connected.

    • 5

Click "Send Invitation." Your invitation is sent immediately. When the recipient accepts your invitation to connect, you are notified and he appears in your list of connections.

Tips & Warnings

  • LinkedIn encourages connecting only to people you know personally. If you frequently attempt to connect to people you don't know, your ability to add connections may be restricted.
