How to Decorate Baseball Caps With Flowers

A white or tan baseball cap is a wise color choice for painting flowers on the hat.

Decorating a baseball cap with flowers enables members of a group to coordinate or is a creative way to express your own personality. Simple flower designs require little artistic skill. Stencils work well as templates if you are uneasy about drawing the design yourself. Adding silk flowers to the cap is another way to give it a funky look. This craft project is enjoyable for children as well as adults. It is less expensive than purchasing a custom-made cap with fancy designs.

Things You'll Need

• Sharpened pencil or piece of chalk
• Stencil (optional)
• Fabric paint in a squeeze bottle
• Fabric paint in bottles
• Paper plate
• Small craft paintbrush
• Silk flowers
• Wire cutter
• Hot glue gun and glue sticks
• Dimensional fabric paint (optional)
• Sequins, beads, appliques or other embellishments (optional)
• Fabric glue (optional)
• Fine point permanent markers (optional)

Instructions

Painted Flowers

1. Draw a design freehand on the baseball cap wherever you want the flowers. Use a sharpened pencil or a piece of chalk to sketch the flowers. Make the design simple for the best results. Choose a solid white or tan baseball cap if possible to enable the flowers to show up well.

2. Outline the design with fabric paint in a squeeze bottle. Squeeze the bottle with a gentle, consistent pressure to obtain a thin line over the drawing. Allow the fabric paint time to dry completely before continuing.

3. Squirt small amounts of the acrylic paint colors onto a paper plate. Fill in the flower, stems and leaves by dipping a small craft paintbrush into the acrylic paint color. Finish each section and clean your brush before using the next color.

4. Wait for the hat to dry completely before wearing it.

Using Silk Flowers

1. Cut the stems off each silk flower behind the flower head. Use wire cutters to cut them.

2. Set the flowers on the baseball hat to determine the most attractive placement. Remove them once you decide.

3. Glue the silk flowers one at a time onto the baseball cap with a hot glue gun. Hold the flower in place for about 20 seconds to allow it time to dry. Repeat with each flower. Now your floral baseball cap is ready to wear.

Tips & Warnings

• Fabric paint is available for inexpensive prices at discount, art supply and craft and hobby stores. Choose a dimensional fabric paint to outline the flower design if you desire; it puffs up once the paint is dry.

• Glue on sequins, beads, appliques or other embellishments if you desire using a fabric glue.

• Fine point permanent markers are available in a wide range of colors. This is a simple way to color the flowers on a hat, but it is important to draw in the design with a sharpened pencil first to prevent mistakes.

• Use black to outline the flower, stems or leaves to make them pop visually. Another option is to use the same or a darker shade of the color that is in each section of the flower. Outlining the design first enables you to fill in the spaces later and makes the artwork look neater.
