DIY Brass Tumbler
A tumbler is a vessel that holds liquid such as water, pop and juice. It has a flat bottom that does not have a foot or stem. The shape of the tumbler does not matter as long as it sits stable on a flat surface. A brass tumbler made at home uses a 2-inch brass pipe and a pipe cap. Make a homemade brass tumbler in approximately 30 minutes.
Things You'll Need
- 2-inch brass pipe
- Ruler
- Soapstone or marker
- Safety glasses
- Bench vise
- Hacksaw
- 2-inch brass cap
- Plumber's tape
- Grinder
- Flat file
- Rattail file
- 320- to 400-grit sandpaper
Instructions

1
Mark and measure a section of 2-inch brass pipe 4 to 8 inches long from the threaded end of the pipe. The length of the pipe determines the height of the tumbler.
-
2
Secure the brass pipe in a bench vise so the length is on a horizontal plain. Cut the tumbler along the marked line with a hacksaw. Take your time. The metal is hard to cut through.

3
Wrap plumbers tape around the pipe threads. Secure the 2-inch brass cap over the end of the pipe.
-
4
Grind the bottom of the brass cap until the tumbler sits solidly on a flat surface without rocking.
-
5
File around the outer edge of the cut brass pipe with a flat file to remove all metal burrs. Shape the outside edge of the tumbler so it has a rounded feel. Use the rattail file to help shape the edge.
-
6
File the inside edge of the brass tumbler with the rattail file to remove all burrs and round the edge.
-
7
Sand the bottom of the tumbler and the inside and outside top edge with 320- to 400-grit sandpaper to smooth.
