The Great Pyramid is the most famous of Egypt's pyramids.

The pyramids of ancient Egypt are among the most famous structures of the ancient world. Built to house the tombs of the rulers of Egypt between 2630 and 1800 BCE, many of these imposing monuments remain standing today, attracting visitors from around the world. The pyramids were built according to simple geometric principles, which makes them easy to model in paper. All you need to make a realistic paper model pyramid are a few simple tools.

Instructions

    • 1

Draw a square on a sheet of paper using a pencil and ruler.

    • 2

Draw a line emerging from the midpoint of one side of the square. The line and the side of the square should form a T-shape. Repeat this process for each side of the square. These lines will be the height of the pyramid.

    • 3

Draw lines connecting the corners of the base to the central line. Your design should now look like a square with an equilateral triangle rising from each of its sides. Draw a small tab or flap on one edge of each triangle.

    • 4

Cut your design out with a craft knife. Score the edges of the square and the tabs gently with the knife, creasing the paper but not cutting through it.

    • 5

Decorate the exterior of your model with colored pencils or paint to create a stone-like pattern.

    • 6

Fold the model into a pyramidal shape. Apply glue to the tabs and hold the sides together until it dries.

Tips & Warnings

  • For a model with fewer seams, draw the triangles connected by their long edges, with only one connecting to the base edge of the square. This is more complicated but creates a smoother appearance.

  • The relationship between the height and the base varies depending on the pyramid you're trying to replicate. For instance, the sides of the base of the Great Pyramid are approximately 230 meters long, while the pyramid is approximately 146.5 meters high. The ratio of the base to the height is 44 to 28.

  • Be cautious when using a craft knife. Always use a sharp blade and work on a safe surface.
