How to Make Lips Look Shiny With Prismacolor Markers

Whether using markers, paints or dry media such as charcoal or pencil, rendering shiny surfaces is predicated upon the process of modeling. Modeling is capturing the gradations of tone values in a curved shape to create the illusion of depth. The rendering of highlights is the other factor to design an image with shine, such as glossed lips. Prismacolor markers comes in a wide array of shades, which allows you to create multiple shiny lip looks.

Instructions

    • 1

Sketch a line in pencil halfway between the bottom of the nose and the point of the chin that curves upward at both ends. The ends should should fall beneath the centers of each eye. This is the outline of the bottom lip.

    • 2

Sketch a line that curves downward at each end, with the ends connecting to the ends of the bottom lip. Sketch a small V shape into the middle of this line for the Cupid's bow.

    • 3

Sketch the crease between the lips. Allow the line to dip slightly into a V shape at the center.

    • 4

Sketch a small rectangular shape near the center of the upper lip, slightly off-center to the right. Sketch another smaller and thinner one close beside it. These shapes are highlights to create shine on the lips.

    • 5

Sketch two similar shapes on the bottom lip, underneath the highlights on the upper lip. These shapes should be thinner than the two on the upper lip.

    • 6

Sketch one more highlight shape, slightly off-center left on the upper lip, and another shape on the bottom lip below them. Each of these shapes are significantly smaller than the highlights on the right side of the lips.

    • 7

Erase any pencil marks until barely visible with your kneaded rubber eraser.

    • 8

Color the edges, outlines and crease on the left side of the lips, with the fine tip of a 60% cool gray Prismacolor marker. Repeat on the right side but use a fine tip 40% cool gray marker.

    • 9

Color the area from the left side of the lips to the center, between the 60% cool gray and around the left side highlights, with the 40% cool gray marker. Do not color all the way to the edges of the highlights.

    • 10

Color the area from the right side of the lips to the center, between the 40% cool gray and around the right side highlights, with the 20% cool gray marker. Do not color all the way to the edges of the highlights.

    • 11

Color the remaining area around all of the highlights with the 10% cool gray marker. Add a touch of 60% cool gray to the crease and corner of the right side of the lips. The combination of the different tones of gray and the highlights will give the lips a shiny luster.

Tips & Warnings

  • The more accurate your tone shapes are to the shapes that occur on real lips, the more convincing your image will be. Study pictures of shiny lips and take notice of the shapes of the different shades of color, and of the shape and placement of highlights.
