Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Dog Bones
  • Dog Toys
  • Rawhide Chews For Dogs
  • Small Nylabones
  • Small Canvas Dog Toys
  • Small Dog Balls
  • Small Fleece Dog Toys
  • Small Holiday Dog Toys
  • Small Rope Dog Toys
  • Small Vinyl Dog Toys
  1. Step 1

Know that the term "small dog" includes all the toy breeds - such as shih tzus - as well as dogs the size of dachshunds.

  2. Step 2

Realize that small dogs have small mouths - you need to purchase toys that will fit in the dog's mouth. To prevent choking, never let your dog play with anything smaller than a pingpong ball.

  3. Step 3

Buy some rawhide sticks. These come in perfect sizes for a small dog and are excellent for dogs who enjoy chewing.

  4. Step 4

Look for small Nylabones as well if your dog likes to chew.

  5. Step 5

Purchase some small vinyl toys. If the toy is made of very pliant vinyl, you needn't worry much about its size since it will flatten to fit in the dog's mouth.

  6. Step 6

Understand that small dogs enjoy fleece or canvas toys because they're soft and warm.

  7. Step 7

Get a small rope toy. These toys are fun for pulling or chasing and provide the extra benefit of cleaning the dog's teeth.

  8. Step 8

Purchase a small ball if your dog likes to chase toys. Be sure the ball is not so small that it could become lodged in the dog's throat.

  9. Step 9

Expect to pay between $1 and $25 for a dog toy.

  10. Step 10

Provide your dog with at least five toys and rotate them frequently to prevent boredom.

Tips & Warnings
  • Throw out any toys that are damaged or have pieces chewed off.
  • Wash toys occasionally.
  • Include your pet during the holiday season by giving toys in holiday shapes and designs - look for Santas, candy canes and reindeer.
  • Find dog toys in pet stores, online stores, discount stores and grocery stores.
  • Never let your dog play with a toy designed for a cat or child. It may cause choking.
  • Never leave children's toys where your dog can reach them. They could come apart and choke your dog.
