Avoid a fix-it ticket or a trip to the auto-repair shop by doing this simple repair yourself. It is often no more difficult than changing a lightbulb at home.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • New Bulb
  • Rag
  • Phillips Screwdriver Or Socket And Ratchet
  • Wire Brush Or Sandpaper
  1. Step 1

Determine whether you access the bulb from the outside (by removing the plastic light cover) or from inside the trunk or under the hood.

  2. Step 2

If the bulb is accessed from the outside, remove the screws that secure the light cover. Usually this will only require a Phillips screwdriver. On some cars, you may need a socket and ratchet.

  3. Step 3

If the bulb is accessed from inside the trunk or under the hood, there will probably be a plastic protective cover. Twist the knob or tab on the cover to loosen it.

  4. Step 4

Remove the burned-out bulb by pushing it in and turning counterclockwise.

  5. Step 5

Take the bulb to an auto-parts store to get the right replacement.

  6. Step 6

Clean the inside of the bulb socket if it is dirty with a wire brush, or a small piece of sandpaper, and a rag.

  7. Step 7

Screw in the new bulb by pushing it in and turning clockwise.

  8. Step 8

Test the bulb (turn on the device) before replacing the light cover.

  9. Step 9

Replace the light cover and tighten the screws.
