Mixing dough can be hard work; even electric mixers get tired now and then. For such times, some mixers have reset buttons. If your handheld or countertop mixer doesn't have one, here are a few ways to get it whirring smoothly again.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

As soon as you smell an acrid, burning odor, turn off the mixer and let it cool for 10 to 20 minutes before turning it on again.

  2. Step 2

If the mixer continues to overheat, split the batter or dough into smaller batches. Mix them separately.

  3. Step 3

Run the mixer for shorter periods and let the mixer cool between each one.

  4. Step 4

If the mixer no longer starts, you may have blown a fuse. Call the manufacturer to ask for parts and directions or for the location of the nearest service center.

Tips & Warnings
  • Higher-wattage mixers are less likely to overheat. A 350-watt countertop mixer should be powerful enough to knead dough for one loaf of bread, but you'll need at least 450 watts for kneading two loaves at a time.
