If you return home after a long day and find your air conditioner out of order, it can leave you hot in more ways than one. Once you've determined what's wrong, getting the unit running right may be just a matter of making one or two small repairs. See also How to Fix a Window Air Conditioner.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

If the unit won't run, check the wall plug and circuit breaker. It could simply mean the power is off. Otherwise, it's a bad thermostat that can only be fixed by a licensed mechanic.

  2. Step 2

If the air won't cool, remove the grill and clean the filter. Clean out any clogs in the evaporator or condenser coils by vacuuming them and scrubbing them lightly with an old toothbrush. If the fan motor is blown or the compressor is bad, call a professional.

  3. Step 3

If the unit simply won't blow air, it means the fan motor is bad. Call a professional.

  4. Step 4

Fix machine leaks by unclogging the drain with a screwdriver, then double-check for correct installation.

  5. Step 5

Prevent ice buildup on coils by cleaning dirty air filters. Or, in external weather conditions colder than 60 degrees, defrost the the coil by turning the selector switch to the fan position. Let it run until the ice melts.

  6. Step 6

Remove the cabinet, reposition the condenser fan and tighten the screw at center of fan in the case of rattling noise. The rattle is coming from a loose condenser or evaporator fan hitting the coils or housing.

on 5/19/2008 I have a GE 115 Volt Portable Electronic Room Air Conditioner. It seems to be having problems cooling. No water collects in the water bucket although some (still a small amount) will drain manually. Anyone have any suggestions about how to fix this?

on 12/27/2007 No air conditioner will blow 30deg air, The coil will ice up lomg befor that. Most air conditioners that have a setting for this tem, are heat/cool units. Anything below 68 deg on a window air is for the heat. The way an air condition worke is that it pulls room air in and and removes heat from the air. A properly working unit has a twenty deg split, that is if room temo is 70 deg, the temp being blown out will be around 60 - 62deg. The reason an air conditioning unit will not cool a room below 68 degrees is becouse as the evaporater becomes colder the presure drops, and when the presure drops enough the coil will ice up and there will be no air flow. If you are takeing the temp of the air coming out and it is 45 deg's then your room temp is around 65 -68 degs. Thas the best it will do. Now you can oversise the unit to bring temp down faster but this will result in short cycleing.
