It is possible to use the transmitter of your alarm system not only to unlock the doors but to pop them open as well.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

    Look Before You Leap

  1. Step 1

Check the remote of your alarm system as well as the alarm. Does the transmitter include door lock/unlock keyless entry or buttons to control auxiliary features? If so, you can proceed with the project. You want two buttons to pop two doors. If your car has four doors, you want four buttons -- one for each door.

  2. Step 2

Gather the following tools and materials: solenoids for each door, screws, screwdrivers, drill, wire crimps, stripper, 12 gauge electrical wire, door panel popper, 1-inch to 1-1/2-inch heavy duty coil springs.

  3. Step 3

Read the instructions that come with the solenoid and your alarm.

  4. The Installation

  5. Step 1

Pop the door panel off the door.

  6. Step 2

Find a location for the solenoid inside the door. You want to mount the solenoid securely to metal. Locate it as close to the door opening mechanism as possible because you will be looping a cable from the solenoid to the opening mechanism. Make certain that the solenoid is aligned so that it offers a straight pull rather than an angled pull.

  7. Step 3

Drill a hole in the door opening mechanism.

  8. Step 4

Loop the cable through the hole and back to the solenoid. Crimp the cable tight.

  9. Step 5

Route the wires from the solenoid through the door jam into the factory loom to the kick panel.

  10. Step 6

Connect the trigger wire to the keyless entry or auxiliary outputs of the alarm's control module.

  11. Step 7

Touch the terminals of a 12 volt battery to the power lead to check if the solenoid works. The door should pop but not open. You will have to add springs to get the doors to actually pop open.

  12. Step 8

Make certain that the spring will fit without obstructing the door from opening and closing. You do this by taking cardboard and folding it so that it is 1-inch thick. Tape the cardboard to the panel in front of the door and close the door. If the door closes okay, proceed. If not, you may not be able to have the door actually pop open. However, it will open using the solenoid.

  13. Step 9

Mount one end of the spring to the panel in front of the door and the other end to the door.

  14. Step 10

Add a push button switch to the trigger wire that leads to the alarm. Tap power for the switch from the fuse block. If something should happen to the alarm or you lose your transmitter, you can use this button to pop open the door. Attach the button to a secure area on the outside of the car.

  15. Step 11

Run a positive and negative lead from the car's battery to a location just outside the car. If the battery should go dead, you can use jumper wires on these leads to supply enough power so that you can pop open the doors. Use terminators on the leads so that they can't touch together.

  16. Step 12

Connect the power wire of the solenoid to the car's battery so you get constant power to the solenoid and connect the trigger wire to the auxiliary output or keyless entry output of the alarm.

  17. Step 13

Ground the solenoid to clean metal inside the passenger compartment of the car.
