How to Buy a Camera in Hong Kong

Cameras may be a bit cheaper in Hong Kong, but if you don't shop wisely, you may end up paying the difference in headaches. Visit the Hong Kong Tourist Association office in Tsim Sha Tsui at the Star Ferry Pier and ask for its brochure. The Hong Kong Tourism Board Web site (hkta.org) lists recommended shopping areas and stores.

    Instructions

      • 1

Make specific decisions about what brand and model camera you want to buy. Researching on the Internet is a fast and effective way to make informed decisions.

      • 2

Check the prices among different shops in the United States as well as Hong Kong to know whether you're getting a good deal.

      • 3

Shop at Hong Kong's reputable establishments. To help discern which retailers are reputable, look for the Quality Tourism Services Scheme symbol of quality on shop display windows.

      • 4

Visit Stanley Street in the Central District. This is where local professional photographers shop.

      • 5

Get a proper receipt. If you're not satisfied with your camera, you'll have an easier time returning it with a receipt than without.

    Tips & Warnings

    • Shop early for the best prices. Chinese merchants consider the first sale of the day to be very important and will offer special prices just to make that first sale.

Wing Shing and Man Shing are same company. However the shop which locate at Sai Yeung Choi St. is quite poor services. I usually go to the others or Citicall, Boradway Photo, Tin Cheung Camera, Kownloon Photo which is much nicer services. I am recommand Tin Cheung Camera at 6B Carnarvon Road in Tsim Sha Tsui which have the widest range of photo equipments and professional services.

Skip Wing Shing in Mongkok. I went there today to buy a lens. I ask to see a Sigma 10-20mm the guy says very gruff "Yoy Want to Buy?!". I said yes and he goes to get the lens. I ask if I can mount the lens on my camera (brought my cam to the shop). Guy says "no can not you can only look at lens in the packaging". All the time he is looking at my like I am an idiot and am wasting his time.Wonder how many cameras they sell using this technique. Bought my lens at Citicall next door. Price was less and they let me look through the lens on my camera.. oh and international warranty!. I checked Hing Lee in Mid Levels very knowledgeable staff a little bit more expensive but not much.. Oh and they let you look through the lens too!

I bought a Nikon at one of the Mongkok stores mentioned. Was advised the warranty was International. Within days of getting home I had problems which required repairs under warranty. When I contacted the stored I was advised that I had to return the camera to Hong Kong, at a cost of $100 in freight for both ways. I spoke to Nikon in Australia, who advised Nikon warranties are not international and that I had been scammed. My advice is; Don't waste your money! Buy in your own country where you have a valid warranty.
