How to Smoke a Cigar Without Disturbing Others

Short of locking yourself away in the attic, it can be difficult to be a considerate cigar smoker. Ask others if they mind. If they do, get yourself as far away as possible.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Ashtrays
  • Ashtrays
  • Breath Fresheners
  • Cologne
  • Perfume
  1. Step 1

Be aware that not everyone thinks cigar smoke is exquisite - not even smoke from a Havana cigar.

  2. Step 2

Smoke only where permitted, both legally and by present company.

  3. Step 3

Go outside, if weather and inclination permit.

  4. Step 4

Go into a separate room if going outside is not convenient.

  5. Step 5

Keep track of your smoke if you light up inside. Is the air conditioner or open window causing the smoke to waft into people's faces?

  6. Step 6

Take note of your neighbors. Has everyone at least finished eating? Smoking and eating do not go together, ever. Smoke kills the sense of smell and therefore taste.

  7. Step 7

Be aware that cigar smoke is denser and heavier than even cigarettes, and can be more annoying to smoke haters.

  8. Step 8

Carefully control your ashes; they can blow like smoke and litter tablecloths and laps.

  9. Step 9

Remember the golden rule whenever it comes to personal habits in public.

Tips & Warnings
  • These days, fewer and fewer people smoke, and the places where they can smoke are becoming limited. As a smoker, especially of cigars, not disturbing others has become a matter of being extra polite and considerate.
  • Smoking on airplanes has been all but outlawed.
  • Smoking inappropriately can cause fire hazards. Be careful with smoking materials, both outside and inside.
  • Be aware of health hazards associated with smoking cigars, such as mouth cancer.

on 8/8/2006 1) Again, smoke outdoors if at all possible. You folks in the Sunbelt and Hawaii, there's no excuse for being indoors anyway (I'm typing this from AZ smoking a Punch in the backyard next to my waterfall pool).
2) Keep fine cigars around and in a quality, maintained, humidor. Your appreciating guests will love the host.
3) Always have extra cigar specific ashtrays on hand when entertaining.
4) If you are in America, keep your Cuban supply under wraps. Don't be a braggart, quietly and gently offer them out to the good friends/family that can appreciate them; and don't reveal your sources.

on 8/8/2006 1) Enjoy a nice drink with a cigar when you can. A good single-malt Scotch, a nice cognac, even a good microbrew often will go well with a good cigar.
2) Smoking outdoors, as a lot of other posters have suggested, is a good way to relax with a cigar.
3) Making the assumption that liberals hate cigars because they don't agree with you politically is stupid and childish. This liberal likes cigars.

Re: suggestion #4...Moving to another room to smoke. Please be aware, that, more than likely, someone else may enter or otherwise use a room after you have smoked in it. That is still particularly nauseating to nonsmokers.

The best advice I can find for cigar smoking is, unless an area is specifically designated for such activity, DON'T!

And, regarding the chewing submission...the individual suggested chewing on a stogie... whether a Cuban to impress or a more common one to satisfy oral frustrations...as being "offensive to "liberals" as well"...I think those who object to the chewing are more in tune with common sanitation and visual appearances than any political leanings. Unless, that is, the individual has divided liberals and others into such as perhaps liberals being those who don't support the NRA but do support the ERA.

I can see no political proclivities specifically attributable to one who smokes, or rather chews, a cigar.

Thank you.

on 6/30/2006 I have found the best place to smoke a cigar is when I am outside camping in the woods with some of my friends (who also like cigars).

Also, as a side note on the proper place to smoke cigars, I have found that on Princess Cruise ships they have a cigar bar on every ship, at least all of the ones I have been on. It's called Churchill's Lounge. You can go to their website and check it out.
