Between the cup holders, the DVD player and the car seats, there isn't much room left in the car for equipment. That's where the rack comes in.

  1. Step 1

Your needs and preferences, along with the type of vehicle you drive, will dictate your choice, but start by identifying models built to fit your specific car. Thule.com and Yakima.com offer expandable, comprehensive rack systems. Expect to pay slightly more for these brands, but know that you are getting good quality. Many other brands exist, particularly for hitch-mount racks. Word to the wise: Make sure you only need one key to operate all locks.

  2. Step 2

If your vehicle already has a receiver hitch, look into trailers. They're simple to take on and off and are fairly light weight. Hitch-mounted boxes are easy on your car and come at a relatively cheap price. A spare-tire hitch works like a trailer hitch but can carry up to three bicycles.

  3. Step 3

If you're looking for weather-proof luggage compartments, look into getting a roof box. They offer security and can improve aerodynamics. However, if you plan to carry bicycles, you still need a separate bike rack.

  4. Step 4

Buy specialty racks if your uses are limited. Ski and snowboard racks make carrying your snow gear extremely simply. the only drawback is that many skiers and boarders tend to be bikers, but a separate bike rack is need if you have one of these. That means more installation.
