How to Buy a Personal Watercraft

Many people refer to personal watercraft (PWC) as Jet Skis, although this trade name applies only to one model made by Kawasaki. No matter what you call them, PWC range from small single-seaters to huge models that seat up to four. Costs range from $6,000 to $10,000.

Difficulty: Moderately challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Determine if you want a sit-down or stand-up PWC. Also decide if you want a craft powerful enough to pull a water-skier or tuber.

  2. Step 2

Examine the various size classes. This includes both engine sizes and hull sizes. Most manufacturers make a variety of both. Engine sizes are rated in cubic centimeters. Larger engines produce more horsepower and more speed, although the hull design has a big influence on performance.

  3. Step 3

Look at how performance and hull design are related. Short, narrow machines are maneuverable and very rewarding for skilled riders but may be difficult for beginners. Wider, longer designs are more stable, carry more people, and deflect spray better, but have reduced maneuverability.

  4. Step 4

See How to Buy a Trailer to transport your new PWC from home to the beach.

Tips & Warnings
  • Many waterways are restricting the use of two-stroke engines due to noise and pollution. New models with four-stroke or direct-injection two-stroke engines satisfy most emissions standards.
  • Life-preservers are required by law (see How to Buy a Personal Flotation Device).
