A Christmas banner is similar to a wreath, except that the greenery is shaped into a line instead of a circle; it hangs horizontally above a mantel or on a wall. Della Robia refers to an object that is decorated with fruit - this fruit-laden banner will bring warmth and holiday spirit to any room of the house.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Ribbons
  • Sheer Hosiery
  • Greenery Branches
  • Picture Hangers
  • Fruits
  • Nuts
  • Paddle Wire
  • Fruits

    Decorate the Banner

  1. Step 1

Cut 4-inch squares from discarded nylon pantyhose. Light colors work best and are less visible on the finished banner.

  2. Step 2

Wrap lemons, pomegranates, limes, crab apples, nuts and other long-lasting fruit in the sections of panty hose. Pull the nylon tightly across the fruit, twist the end and wrap the floral wire securely around the nylon, leaving 6 to 8 inches of wire.

  3. Step 3

Tie several wrapped nuts together into one cluster, leaving 6 to 8 inches of wire.

  4. Step 4

Tuck the prepared fruits and nuts into the greenery on the banner, wiring them in place as you go. Leave some space between the fruit.

  5. Step 5

Add a bow to the center if desired.

  6. Step 6

Hang the banner on the wall with a picture hook.

  7. Construct the Banner's Frame

  8. Step 1

Select two long branches of greenery like oak, magnolia or holly as the foundation of the banner's frame. The branches should be 16 to 24 inches long.

  9. Step 2

Place the two branches end to end, overlapping them by 6 inches.

  10. Step 3

Wire them together with floral wire, also known as paddle wire.

  11. Step 4

Select a few shorter branches and wire the ends of the stems to the center point of the frame, with the tips of the branches facing out toward either end of the banner.

  12. Step 5

Tie an additional wire around the middle of the shorter branches and the frame to keep them from flopping over. Continue adding branches until the banner looks full and lush.

  13. Step 6

Turn the banner over and select the two strongest branches. String wire between the two so that you can hang your banner when it is complete. Use several thicknesses of wire for extra support.

Tips & Warnings
  • For a bow-shaped banner, arrange the two foundation branches so both are arching downward. For an 'S' shape, secure the branches with one curving upward, the other curving downward.
  • Twigs or bare branches without leaves can also be added to the foundation to achieve a more linear, rather than bowed shape.
  • Della Robia pieces are heavy. Make sure to use a picture hanger that can support the weight of the banner.
