  1. Step 1

Face forward, legs parallel about 1 1/2 shoulder widths apart. Keep elbows in and hands up in a fighting position.

  2. Step 2

Raise the blocking hand (either hand) to shoulder level with palm facing forward.

  3. Step 3

Position your non-blocking arm against your side as a guard. Turn your fist upward.

  4. Step 4

Wait for the attacker's strike to begin, then bring your hand down and inward. Push the palm heel out and down.

  5. Step 5

Press the heel of your palm against the attacking arm's forearm, elbow or wrist. If you are blocking a kick, press the palm heel against the attacker's ankle or knee.

  6. Step 6

Return your blocking arm immediately back to a defensive guard position.

Tips & Warnings
  • The palm block requires extensive practice on its timing to be effective. Practice with a partner, starting slowly and increasing speed until you can parry a variety of strikes.
  • Add power to the palm block by bringing your open hand next to your ear with the palm facing forward and twisting your hips just prior to contact.
  • Practicing the martial arts is an inherently dangerous activity that can result in serious injury or death. We recommend that you seek proper training and equipment before attempting this activity.
  • If you have any condition that would impair or limit your ability to engage in physical activity, please consult a physician before attempting this activity.
