Massage raises the level of performance and lowers the level of stress that running can cause to the body. It's also a great psychological benefit.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Ask a friend for a referral. Although you can find a message therapist through an organization or directory, word of mouth is the most effective way.

  2. Step 2

Find a specialist. Most massage therapists are able to do sports massage, but some have special training for massaging athletes.

  3. Step 3

Use massage as part of serious training. Marathon preparation is a good example.

  4. Step 4

Cool down thoroughly after a run, especially if you opt for a post-race massage.

  5. Step 5

Use massage for injury recovery - a good one will help restore mobility in injured muscles.

  6. Step 6

Get your massage after serious training or racing rather than before. Muscles that are sore or overly relaxed from a massage do not perform as well.

  7. Step 7

Practice massaging with a partner or massaging yourself. Focus on the feet, ankles, legs, buttocks, shoulders and neck.

Tips & Warnings
  • Expect to spend between about $60 to $100 for an hour-long message. Most therapists also have half-hour rates.
  • If you have any condition that would impair or limit your ability to engage in physical activity, please consult a physician before attempting this activity. This information is not intended as a substitute for professional medical advice or treatment.
