Instructions

    • 1

Line players up on either goal line.

    • 2

Skate as hard as you can to the first blue line. Stop and quick-start heading in the opposite direction. Skate back to the original goal line.

    • 3

Skate without resting to the red line in the center. Stop and quick-start back to the goal line.

    • 4

Repeat this process with both the far blue line and the far goal line.

Tips & Warnings

  • Always skate as hard as you can to each line. Skate to all four lines without resting.

  • Make sure you come to a complete stop at each line. Circling around will not be as helpful.

  • Each time you stop, always stop facing the same side. This way all of the muscles are worked evenly.

  • By the time you are finishing your final cut, you should feel a burn.

  • Try to finish with a strong burst of speed, it will help in a game.

Try doing lightning drills with a puck. It helps improve both your skating and stick handling skills. Plus it's harder.

These drills are also called "Herbies", after Coach Herb Brooks of 1980 Olympic Hockey fame. To increase the cardio and aerobic workout, once the skills involved are mastered, impose a time limit to complete each repetition of the drill. To save ice when doing more than a couple of these at a time, switch goal lines, possibly with a circle skate between drills to keep your skaters loose.
