Things You'll Need:
- Copies of the National Adoption Directory
-
Step 1
Decide what type of agency is best suited to the child you're looking for. A public agency generally deals with special-needs and older children; private agencies handle a broader range of adoptions. To adopt a child from another country, you will need a licensed agency with experience in intercountry adoption.
-
Step 2
Get a copy of the National Adoption Directory from the National Adoption Information Clearinghouse (calib.com/naic).
-
Step 3
Select a short list of agencies. Check that they are licensed, and ask for references. Get information about payment schedules. Follow up on the references you receive. Weed out any agencies involved in pending or past legal action. (Contact your state's attorney general office to find out if the agencies you are considering have faced legal action in the past.)
-
Step 4
Meet with a few agencies. Ask how they approach the adoption process, if they offer post-adoption support services and what fees are involved. Look for a positive attitude and an experienced staff.
-
Step 5
Move forward by completing an application and participating in the home study.

on 2/27/2009 Wow that's definitely great!!! We didn't spend much either when we adopted our son. We went the no lawyer route and was very pleased. We adopted him from one of our family members which is why it may have worked out even better. Sandyhttp://www.rapidadoption.com/free_adoption_booklet.html

on 4/26/2007 Our family adopted 4 children from our local Department of Children and Family (DCF) and it took less than 1 1/2 years to complete the whole process and took less than $400. We used a DCF lawyer and the state paid for everything except for their new birth certificates which cost about $400. You can adopt great children from your local DCF agency for less than a private agency. Our children were in foster care for over 4 years and thier parents rights were taken away. They have been with us for over 6 years and they are wonderful loving children. I think my husband and I have learned more from them then they have learned from us.Adoption is a terrific way to add to your family and show love to children who have no family.
