Things You'll Need:

  • Gaming magazines
  1. Step 1

Start by doing your homework. Check online (at Amazon.com and ConsumerSearch.com) and in gaming magazines (GamePro and Electronic Gaming Monthly) for product reviews, or ask video-game fanatics you know which system they prefer.

  2. Step 2

Stick with one of the big brand names: Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo. The system will require updates, upgrades and support in the future--and a company that is still around to provide them.

  3. Step 3

Shop at a retailer that stocks different systems and compare them. Ask a salesperson to define the differences between them and describe any additional features like Internet connectivity, expandability and CD/DVD capability.

  4. Step 4

Give each system a test run. Is it easy to use?

  5. Step 5

Ask about the library of game titles available for each system. Make sure you can play the games you want. If you are upgrading from an older system, find out if you can play your old games on the new machine.

  6. Step 6

Find out what the basic price includes. Peripherals can bump up costs considerably, but many new systems have starter packs that include several options like a second controller.

  7. Step 7

Compare in-store prices at a site like BizRate.com.

Tips & Warnings
  • Look for special offers that bundle a few games with a console purchase.

on 8/8/2006 When looking for value for money, Nintendo is great. It also makes more games that are suitable for any age group. Their handheld games are virtually indestructible, too!

on 8/8/2006 It depends on what you want. If you want to be able to show off realistic graphics, Xbox360 or PS3 are roughly the same thing. They also lean toward more graphic, adult games, so they aren't really suitable for kids. Nintendo Wii is suitable for any age group and puts the emphasis on fun. If you don't like the idea of your kids getting no exercise, bear in mind the Nintendo Wii requires you to get up and move. As a parent, Wii is also a good choice because it is easy for you to join in. The controls are simple. You don't need to worry which button does what, you just wave the controller itself!
