If the remote control for your TV has croaked--or if your collection of remotes is getting so big and confusing that only an 8-year-old can sort it out--it's time to shop for a universal remote. Chances are good that one device can handle all of your video and audio equipment and reduce the clutter on your coffee table.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • List of all remote controlled devices
  1. Step 1

List all the remote-control devices in your home. Note the type of device (CD player, TV, VCR) and the manufacturer.

  2. Step 2

Shop at a discount store if you want just a basic unit. These can cost as little as $10. Special universal remotes with large, colorful buttons are good choices for seniors, people with limited vision or other disabilities.

  3. Step 3

Go to an electronics store or shop online if you want something more powerful. Some remotes have LCD screens that change depending on the device you're controlling. Others are voice-activated. Prices can go as high as $500.

  4. Step 4

Consult your list to make sure the remote you choose will control all your components. The remote's package should have a chart specifying what brands and types of devices it will control.

  5. Step 5

Look for a device that lets you program macros if you want to simplify lots of complicated gear. Macros can perform several functions in sequence with the press of a single button. For example, a home-theater user might create a macro that turns on the TV, sets it to DVD, turns on the DVD player, turns on the amplifier, sets the volume to level 5, and opens the DVD tray. (See How to Buy a Home Theater System.)

  6. Step 6

Home remote-control systems can also handle some functions of universal remotes. (See How to Buy a Home Automation System.)

Tips & Warnings
  • If your needs are simple, see if the remote that came with your most recent audio or video purchase can be programmed to support multiple devices. You might save yourself a shopping trip.
  • Very high-end remotes can attach to a computer for programming.
