Step 1
Focus your intergalactic collection. For example, narrow your search to just vintage (1977 to 1985) items, such as loose figures, vehicles or lightsabers. Or choose a favorite character, scene or ship. Internet auctions are your best bet for these items.
-
Step 2
Watch for new-releases dates in collector magazines and on sites like GalacticHunter.com, and online forums. Visit SciFi gatherings to get an idea of what's hot and what's not.
-
Step 3
Keep in mind future resale value. It's not always the hero who wins the day. Bad-guy Boba Fett may bring a bigger payoff to collectors than Luke Skywalker. As with any collectible, it all depends on rarity. More Lukes were made, another reason why this character goes for less.

Step 4
Do not open, bend or damage the packaging. The best prices go to items in mint condition.

on 9/23/2008 "Buy three of your favorite new figures..." ??? I disagree. Often figures are re-released in new and improved forms with better articulation and additional accessories. Stockpiling figures with the intent of extended playability or increases in value are no longer options in todays Star Wars collecting environment. With older figures (not vintage) easilly available at below retail prices on internet auction sites, the once popular concept of buying in threes is no long recommendable.
