Instructions

    • 1

Consult price guides, which list collectibles and their price ranges. General guides list a number of collecting categories in one book. You'll also find more-specific single-topic guides.

    • 2

Visit shops or antique shows to see how items similar to yours are priced. Establishing a relationship with a dealer may get you a better price when you're ready to sell or buy.

    • 3

Contact auction houses to obtain a report of the most recent sales. Look for items similar to yours and the price they fetched.

    • 4

Scour the Internet for antiques and collectibles that are for sale through online auctions or stores.

    • 5

Search newspapers and other publications devoted to antiquing to find collecting clubs.

    • 6

Find an experienced mentor who can tell you if you're getting a fair offer. Some of these experts work as pickers (regional buyers) for antique dealers and see a lot of merchandise.

    • 7

Get a verbal appraisal from a dealer for free. If you have an item you think is really valuable, you might want to contact a professional appraiser, who will charge for that service.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you're selling to a dealer, expect to get only 50 percent or less of the price listed in the price guides. Selling to another collector may bring a better price.

  • If you own a valuable collectible, such as a piece of fine art, always seek out a second opinion on its value before you sell or buy.
