In many circles, over-the-shoulder leather cases and padded computer bags have replaced the hard-sided briefcase that once was considered the standard of the business world. First determine your budget.

Think big. You may intend to travel light when heading to and from the office, but look for expandable compartments and outside pockets for stashing extra items.
-
2
Hoist the case or bag. Leather is strong and classic, but can be heavy. Consider lighter-weight alternatives like canvas and Cordura. If you routinely carry heavy books and files, a case with wheels and a retractable handle might work well for you.

Look for features that fit your needs: a padded laptop compartment, pockets for a phone and PDA; a back sleeve that allows the briefcase to slip over the handle of wheeled luggage; backpack straps or chest strap, and lockable zippers.

Good sensible article. It is always to better to buy functional instead of brand name. -

It's useful for a briefcase to be able to be kept upright instead of laying down on its side.
