How to Buy a Briefcase

In many circles, over-the-shoulder leather cases and padded computer bags have replaced the hard-sided briefcase that once was considered the standard of the business world. First determine your budget.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Think big. You may intend to travel light when heading to and from the office, but look for expandable compartments and outside pockets for stashing extra items.

  2. Step 2

Hoist the case or bag. Leather is strong and classic, but can be heavy. Consider lighter-weight alternatives like canvas and Cordura. If you routinely carry heavy books and files, a case with wheels and a retractable handle might work well for you.

  3. Step 3

Look for features that fit your needs: a padded laptop compartment, pockets for a phone and PDA; a back sleeve that allows the briefcase to slip over the handle of wheeled luggage; backpack straps or chest strap, and lockable zippers.

Tips & Warnings
  • Bicycle courier style bags sell for $100 or less, while you can pay $500 and more for high-end leather cases from Dooney & Bourke, Atlas of Boston, Coach and Hartmann.

on 12/3/2008 Good sensible article. It is always to better to buy functional instead of brand name.

on 11/22/2005 It's useful for a briefcase to be able to be kept upright instead of laying down on its side.
