Picture Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany's. Elegant, timeless and tasteful, a stylish cocktail dress has long been a must-have item for any woman's closet.

From Quick Guide: Cocktail 101
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Shop at stores such as Talbot's and Ann Taylor, and many department stores to find options in the $100 to $150 range. If you intend to spend more or want something unusual, head to a boutique.

  2. Step 2

Buy an all-season fabric, such as lightweight wool or silk. Linen and cotton are also options, but their color may fade faster. Test how easily the fabric wrinkles: Grab and release a handful.

  3. Step 3

Ignore hemline fads and select a flattering length just above or around the middle of the knee. Shorten a dress that's too long.

  4. Step 4

Look for a versatile style that you can dress up or down with different shoes, jewelry and other accessories. A sleeveless or short-sleeved dress works year-round, either alone or with a jacket, sweater or wrap.

Tips & Warnings
  • When you try the dress on, walk, sit and dance around to make sure it's comfortable.
  • Go from day to night in a flash: replace a canvas tote, denim jacket and sandals with a beaded bag, pashmina shawl and stilettos.
