How to Buy a First Aid Kit as a Gift

Although a first aid kit will never be adequate for serious illness and injury, having one around for minor maladies is essential, especially for travelers.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Consider where the gift will be used. A first aid kit for the traveler may contain different items than a first aid kit for the car or the home.

  2. Step 2

Try to tailor the first aid kit to the recipient's interests. For example, a hiker's first aid kit may include water purification tablets and blister supplies, while a kit for a person going on a cruise may contain motion sickness medications along with other basic first aid materials.

  3. Step 3

Be sure the kit is lightweight and easy to pack, especially if it will be taken on a trip.

  4. Step 4

Choose a kit in a waterproof pouch if it's likely to be used in inclement weather (such as on a hiking or camping trip).

  5. Step 5

Make sure the kit has basic first aid instructions included, or buy a pocket first aid guide to go with it.

Tips & Warnings
  • First aid kits can cost anywhere from less than $10 for the basics to more than $100. More is not necessarily better. A basic first aid kit - containing bandages, antibiotic cream, antiseptic wipes, adhesive tape, a thermometer and tweezers - may be perfectly adequate.
  • If you can't find a kit with the components you want, try making your own. Buy a pouch or suitable container and shop for supplies yourself. You can often save a lot of money over the cost of a ready-made kit.
  • Remember that a first aid kit is no substitute for competent medical care. Seek medical help if you are ill or injured.
  • Always check the expiration dates on any medications, creams or ointments included in the first aid kit.

on 8/8/2006 Tip 1. Have a diabetic food pouch. This pouch would have a few lifesavers, a bottle of orange juice, and a few digestive cookies. Then if a person is having a sugar low, they have some food.

Tip 2. Of course if the casualty has a severe injury, one gives no liquids. But in many cases the person is only thirsty. It helps to have a bottle or two of water in you first aid kit.
