If you're on a quest for the perfect carry-on - a bag that can be easily packed and stowed on the airplane and effortlessly carried from gate to gate - here's what you need to know.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

Step1
Look for a bag in the range of 14 to 15 inches wide by 12 inches high.
Step2
Choose one with plenty of pockets - inside and out - including an outside pocket for airline tickets. Most of the outside pockets should be zippered to keep items from falling out.
Step3
Choose a roomy bag that will hold as much as possible, but still keep things accessible without a lot of digging.
Step4
Find a carry-on bag that will ride "piggyback" on a wheeled suitcase by attaching to the handle. This makes it easier to transport and keeps hands free.
Step5
Make sure the strap is wide and fits comfortably over the shoulder. The strap should also be adjustable.
Step6
Choose a color that goes with the rest of the traveler's luggage.
Step7
Make sure the bag has a luggage tag. If not, buy one and attach it.
Step8
Consider having the bag monogrammed as an nice touch.

Tips & Warnings

  • Most airlines now have strict requirements about the size of bags that can be carried onto planes. Many places that sell luggage will tell you if the bag meets most airline carry-on specifications. If it's not mentioned on the manufacturer's tag, or if the salesperson doesn't mention it, do a little research yourself before you buy.
