Step 1
Determine what kind of motorcycle you want. You can find off-road bikes, scooters, street bike, power and touring motorcycles and vintage rides. There are more, but these are likely the types you'll be deciding on.
-
Step 2
Decide what size engine you want. A highly tuned, four-cylinder 600 cc machine as much more power than a single-cylinder. A straight-four--four cylinders arranged in a straight line--are common in sports bikes. Harley-Davidson favors the V-twin, which is big and heavy, not really suited for sportiness and quick handling, but for cruising. Two-stroke engines are only found in off-road bikes in the U.S. because they don't meet emissions standards otherwise.
-
Step 3
Pair your engine with the model you want. You may find some models of motorcycles come equipped only with one kind of engine. Other body types, however, can often handle a small range of engines. If you're a beginning ride, you may opt for steady cruising found in a V-twin, like Harley-Davidson, Honda Goldwing and some BMW models.
-
Step 4
Do your research if you're buying vintage. Vintage motorcycles are rare and expensive. If you find one for cheap, it's likely missing some key components. Check on this as much as possible. Vintage bikes are for the enthusiast, but usually the one who knows how to tinker around with the mechanics. If you ride it often, it will need some upkeep.

on 8/8/2006 Be sure to check out the particular model you're looking at before purchasing. Be knowledgeable about poor brakes, bad mirrors or unreliable carbs. This way, you can look at these things more closely when checking out the bike. Also, be wary of aftermarket modifications. Sometimes these mods don't fit well with the bike (i.e. handlebars that interfere with the instrument cluster, wrong tire size, poor-fitting seat). Any of these things can be used to negotiate price. And don't forget to ask for the original parts if available.

on 12/27/2007 Vintage V Twin builds and restores vintage motorcycles. Depending on your scope of "vintage", a well maintained vintage motorcycle can be riden daily and is an investment the owner can enjoy. When is the last time someone took their 401K for a spin, played with thier Roth, or polished a dividend? In, fact their are plenty of vintage motorcycles that are beautiful, restored motorcycles that an enthusiast can ride on a regular basis!
