An inside-outside block (uchi-ude-uke) is an upper-body defense that will ward off a punch or kick to the middle, while setting you up for a counterattack.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Martial Arts Supplies
  • Martial Arts Uniforms
  • Martial Arts Videos
  1. Step 1

Face forward, and turn your body to the side, one leg ahead of the other.

  2. Step 2

Bring the fist of your forward arm back to your opposite hip, placing it under your opposite arm.

  3. Step 3

Keep the palm side of the fist facing downward.

  4. Step 4

Twist the wrist of your blocking arm, rotating your fist upward to shoulder level while your other arm pulls strongly toward the hip.

  5. Step 5

Block with the muscular part of the forearm.

Tips & Warnings
  • Place the elbow of the blocking arm about a fist's distance away from the body, and keep it at a 90-degree angle.
  • Remember to keep your shoulder facing your target and your body facing away so that you are less vulnerable to a strike.
  • If you have any condition that would impair or limit your ability to engage in physical activity, please consult a physician before attempting this activity. This information is not intended as a substitute for professional medical advice or treatment.
