How do you block an attacker's strike from above, below or either side? An x-block (juji-uke) is a two-handed block that will ward off the attack while giving you a number of options for turning the situation to your advantage.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Martial Arts Supplies
  • Martial Arts Uniforms
  • Martial Arts Videos
  1. Step 1

Face forward with one leg ahead of the other. Keep your legs shoulder-width apart.

  2. Step 2

Cross your arms (usually right over left) with hands opened or closed.

  3. Step 3

Thrust your arms together at the target (most likely the attacker's wrists).

  4. Step 4

Use your wrists to trap the attacking limb.

Tips & Warnings
  • Practice variations of the x-block with a partner. Try both open and closed hands. Block with one hand while striking with the other. Or, block and grab the attacker's wrist and then twist to perform a joint-lock technique.
  • Practice timing your blocks with a partner: As your partner strikes from different positions, time your x-block to meet the strike.
  • Practicing the martial arts is an inherently dangerous activity that can result in serious injury or death. We recommend that you seek proper training and equipment before attempting this activity.
  • If you have any condition that would impair or limit your ability to engage in physical activity, please consult a physician before attempting this activity.
