1
Pack properly for a backcountry expedition. Depending on the extent of your trip, this may include: first-aid kit, compass, map, extra clothing, food, water and eye protection. Deeper expeditions may require snowshoes, crampons, collapsible poles, ice axe, shovels and avalanche transceivers.
-
2
Train yourself properly for backcountry riding. You must be an excellent snowboarder in all types of conditions (especially powder) and must be in superior physical condition. There are many books and even some schools to help you understand the intricate dangers a snow-covered mountain presents.

-
3
Hook up with people who know what they're doing.
-
4
Take every safety precaution. Nobody is looking out for you in the backcountry, so it's entirely up to you. Don't mistake backcountry skiing for a black-diamond slope. There is no ski patrol in the backcountry.
-
5
Watch out for your companions. Make sure you can hear and see one another at all times. The only reason for splitting up is when one enters a potentially perilous situation - the others should hold back to watch and make sure that person is OK.
