  1. Step 1

Find an open, unobstructed slope for learning to snowboard powder. Early in the morning after a fresh snowfall is the best time.

  2. Step 2

Point your nose straight down the slope and get going with some speed. Don't worry so much about your edges in the powder yet. Unlike ice, powder allows you to snowboard straight without much difficulty.

  3. Step 3

Keep your weight slightly toward the tail.

  4. Step 4

Bounce up gently and float high on the powder. This also helps keep your speed up.

  5. Step 5

Retain your speed and begin carving small turns. This should take little effort in good powder.

  6. Step 6

Bounce up at the beginning of each turn to free your board from the powder and keep you riding high.

  7. Step 7

Establish a rhythm of rising up on the powder and steering. Rise and steer, rise and steer, until you are carving smoothly back and forth.

  8. Step 8

    Know nirvana.

Tips & Warnings
  • Keep up your speed in the powder or you will bog down.
  • Tilt only slightly on your turns. If you dig too hard you will lose your speed.
  • Never snowboard alone. Make sure you can see and hear the people you are riding with.
  • Watch out for long, flat areas. Get a lot of speed going before you reach these areas.
  • Practice frog-hopping with your board on your feet to get to a safe place from deep powder.
  • Watch out for hidden sinkholes around rocks, tree wells and stumps.
  • Be aware of powder slopes that are avalanche-prone.
  • Snowboarding is an inherently dangerous activity that can result in serious injury or death. We recommend that you seek proper training and equipment before attempting this activity.
