How to Buy an RTR Slot Car Set

RTR, which stands for "ready to run," is a slot car that can race right out of the box.

Things You’ll Need:

• Slot Car Kit
• Slot Car Guide Braids

1. Head to a local hobby shop or slot car raceway.
2. Ask the clerk to show you RTR cars in the scale you intend to race: 1/24, 1/32 or HO.
3. Choose a car that looks interesting to you. Most RTR cars perform about the same, so it's mostly an aesthetic choice.
4. Make sure to get some spare guide braids if you intend to race.
5. Pay for your car; most cost between $20 and $40.

Tips & Warnings

• If you just want to race for the day, many tracks will rent you an RTR car.
• Make sure the scale of your car matches the scale of the track where you'll be racing. 1/24 is the most common for track racing.
