When choosing play yard equipment, keep in mind the space available, the ages of the children playing, safety and the possibilities for expansion.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

    Measure your play area.

  2. Step 2

Calculate the space needed around the equipment. Consider the clearance needed for swings and children's tendency to jump, for example.

  3. Step 3

Identify any natural features, such as climbing trees or grass.

  4. Step 4

Consider any materials you already have on hand, such as tires for swings, ropes for climbing or logs.

  5. Step 5

Count the kids likely to play on the equipment. If only one child will play there, a seesaw is a waste; a sandbox might be better.

  6. Step 6

Look at the ground. If it's going to need covering with sand, chips or rubber mats, figure that into your budget.

  7. Step 7

Shop for wooden as well as steel equipment. If you live in a rainy or cold climate, remember that steel tubes can rust. Consider weatherproofed wood.

Tips & Warnings
  • Standards for play yard equipment vary slightly from state to state. In general, the equipment should have no protruding edges to catch clothes; no openings between 3.5 and 9 inches to trap a child's head; and no openings larger than 3/8 inch and smaller than 1 inch that could catch a child's finger.
  • If you decide on a sandbox, try to keep the cat out of it.
  • Always supervise children using play yard equipment.
