Buy Pre-Built Models

Scale-model replicas of airplanes, ships or cars can spark memories of earlier adventures or tie us to history. Many scale replicas have become collectible as well and can increase in value.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Historic Wooden Ship Models
  • Blue Water Navy Ship Models
  • HMS Victory Plastic Ship Model
  • Soleil Royale Plastic Ship Model
  • T.M. Corporation Aircraft Models
  • Maisto, Guiloy, Classic Motor Works car replicas
  1. Step 1

Know the interest of the person for whom you're buying the model.

  2. Step 2

Remember that there is virtually no limit to the historic replicas available. You can choose from airplanes, automobiles, ships, boats, armored vehicles, trains, motorcycles and NASA rockets.

  3. Step 3

Remember, too, a completed scale model may provoke a deeper interest in a youngster. Maisto, Guiloy and Classic Metal Works manufacture detailed scale car models with prices beginning around $25.

  4. Step 4

Consider where the person will display the model. A model displayed in a business setting should be more sophisticated than one kept in a less public area.

  5. Step 5

Check the person's current collection to avoid duplication.

  6. Step 6

Consult family and friends for recommendations.

  7. Step 7

Note the scale of the replicas the person displays. Buy something similar.

  8. Step 8

Buy a variety of economical models rather than one expensive model if you're offering a gift to a new collector.

  9. Step 9

Check out specialty stores and auction houses to learn about types and quality.

  10. Step 10

Ask a store or auction house for literature.

Tips & Warnings
  • Some experts consider replicas manufactured by Blue Water Navy to be "simply the best." A 1:350-scale, highly detailed model of the historic World War II aircraft carrier USS Enterprise is more than two feet long. Such models are significant investments, selling at well over $500.
  • T.M. Corporation manufactures a wide variety of military and civilian aircraft replicas in wood, plastic and resin. A wooden, 1:32-scale model of the British WW II era Mosquito is offered at less than $150.
  • Some scale replicas are wonderfully authentic. You might find a model car with doors, hood and trunk that open and an engine installed under the hood.
  • A high-quality scale replica may cost several hundred dollars.
  • Be aware of space limitations. Replicas and scale models come in all sizes. For example, a model of a Boeing B-29 Superfortress may have a wingspan of 2 feet.
  • Make an investment purchase only after seeking knowledgeable advice.
  • Remember, there's no guarantee a replica will increase in value.
