Learn a bit about the company so you'll have a context for the products. Gund was established in Norwalk, CT in 1898 by Adolph Gund. It moved to Manhattan around the turn of the century and was one of the first companies to understand the brave new world of licensing: Gund launched the Krazy Kat license (which later evolved into Pat Sullivan's Felix the Cat) in 1922 and began to make Mickey Mouse and other Disney characters in 1948. In the early 1970s, Gund began distributing internationally.

Take note of the company's licensing history, especially if you're interested in collectibles. Gund has made a lot of event- and time-specific products over the years, including a WAC doll dressed in army camouflage to promote war bonds during World War II, election-year mascots for both the Democrats and Republicans, and pandas to commemorate President Nixon's trip to China.

Decide who you're shopping for. A new baby? Your father? This will help you narrow your choices to the appropriate products (Gund's baby line, obviously, for a new baby. For your dad - well, the collectibles are probably a good bet, although you can't go wrong with a good bear).

Decide if you want to shop online or in person. In either case, Gund's Web site (Gund.com) can help you find a convenient outlet.

    Tips & Warnings

    • If you're going to collect, you'll probably want to learn about the company's manufacturing history as well. Whether a bear is stuffed with wood shavings, Kapok (foam rubber) or a newer synthetic will tell you a lot about its history.

    • Gund's new plush toys range in price from $6 to $250.
