How to Make Paper Link Chains to Decorate a Christmas Tree

Nothing brings back childhood Christmases like long, linked paper chains. It's still a great project for kids - and the paper selection has improved over the years.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Choose the paper. Chains look best if they incorporate a mixture of colors and textures, and the more choices kids have, the more excited they get.

  2. Step 2

Cut the paper into strips. Narrow, short strips make beautiful, delicate chains but are hard on little fingers; 1 inch by 6 inches is a good size for kids.

  3. Step 3

Set the paper up in piles (or bowls) according to color - gold here, red there and so forth.

  4. Step 4

Put glue on one end and loop the piece back to form a ring.

  5. Step 5

Insert another piece of paper through the ring, then put glue on one end and loop around to make the second link.

  6. Step 6

Continue until the paper's all gone or you can't stand it anymore.

  7. Step 7

Allow the glue to dry before hanging the chains on the tree.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you're feeling brave, let your kids decorate some of the links with glitter.
  • If you've got kids of different ages, it's a good idea to do this while the younger ones are napping or busy at something else. White glue washes off, but it's messy.
