How to Decorate a Tropical-Theme Christmas Tree

White Christmases are traditional - but when it's cold and wet and dank outside, many of us dream of warmer climes. If you can't spend the holidays in the tropics, bring the islands indoors with a tropical-theme tree.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Brightly Colored Jute Cord
  • Strings Of Seashells
  • Ukuleles
  • Christmas Tree Skirts
  • Christmas Trees
  • Cocktail Umbrellas
  • Leis
  • Plastic Tropical Fish
  • Tree Stands
  • Miniature Bottles Of Rum
  • Christmas tree lights (palm trees and tropical fish, or hula girls)
  1. Step 1

Buy a tree and set it up.

  2. Step 2

Put lights on it. For a tropical-theme tree, replace some bulbs so you've got lots of yellow, orange, green and blue - or get strings of lights in the shape of tropical fish and hula girls.

  3. Step 3

Collect the materials you'll need: cocktail umbrellas, little bottles of rum, strings of shells, paper fold-up pineapples, miniature tropical fish (plastic, of course) and parrots, for starters. Party supply stores are a great place to start since luaus are always in style, and check toy stores for doll-size scuba sets.

  4. Step 4

Get some string or cord to tie everything on - brightly colored jute will complement the tropical theme.

  5. Step 5

Attach the decorations to the tree, starting with the biggest items. Then move on to medium and smaller items, arranging as you go. Some items will practically attach themselves - the cocktail umbrellas, for example, can be propped on the branches. Use the cord to tie the rest of the items to the ends of branches.

  6. Step 6

Don't forget something special - a ukulele, perhaps? - for the top.

Tips & Warnings
  • Scale your decorations to the size of your tree. If you're decorating a very large or very tall tree, you can use bigger items.
  • Get a grass skirt and cut it up and use the grass instead of tinsel.

on 11/23/2007 I'm planning to do this. I also got some palm tree and ukulele metal ornaments from Hilo Hattie (that kind of look like those Mexican tin ornaments)

I think you forgot the obvious decoration for the top: a starfish! I have one that's about 20 years old but I think it will work.
