      • 1

Determine a color and style that are right for your sailor. Recent years have seen an increase in options for the "look" of functional sailing gear.

      • 2

Check construction quality. Look for things such as double-stitched seams and satin-lined sleeves.

      • 3

Look at water resistance and breathability. Allowing body moisture to escape is as important as keeping water outside.

      • 4

Inspect the lining. A good jacket will be completely lined with a material such as bunting.

      • 5

Inspect the collar. The collar should zip all the way to the top.

      • 6

Make sure all the pockets zip close.

All valid point 5 years a go. New fabrics mean more possibilities for production. A good 3 layer jacket should NOT have lining. This only hinders breathability and adds weight. Check the design for unnecessary features. Every extra pocket or flap means more chance of leakage. You do not 8 pockets on a sailing jacket (you're on a boat so everything is near by). To summarize, look for top fabrics and clean design.

All these points are really valuable, one thing to bear in mind is visiblity. A jacket should have reflective qualities or be bright in colour. This works on several levels: Off the boat you get noticed - can't be bad! On the boat you are easily recognised - beats being called another name! Finally if you go in the water then recovery is quicker.
