    Make sure an electronic hand-bearing compass is the best choice for your sailor. Simpler, mechanical compasses don't have as many things that can break.

  2. Step 2

  3. Step 3

    Make sure it's waterproof.

  4. Step 4

    Check manufacturer's specifications for accuracy. It should be + or - no more than a few degrees.
