Woodpeckers drill on houses for a variety of reasons: courtship drumming, drilling for insects or drilling for storage. Here's how to get them to stop.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Squirt woodpeckers with water from a hose or a high-powered water pistol.

  2. Step 2

Bang on the inside wall opposite of where the woodpeckers are drilling.

  3. Step 3

Nail metal or plastic sheeting over the area where the woodpeckers are drilling.

  4. Step 4

Use chicken wire or wire mesh over pecked areas, attaching it 1 to 2 inches from the side of the house. Woodpeckers won't have access to the wood.

Tips & Warnings
  • Woodpeckers generally drill on homes made of wood or with wood siding, especially of redwood or cedar.
  • Have your house checked for termites, which may attract woodpeckers.
  • All species of woodpeckers are protected by federal law. Shooting, trapping or otherwise harming them is forbidden.

on 4/30/2008 A bird expert told my mom that woodpeckers are afraid of owls. He suggested she purchase a large plastic owl from a hardware store and place it on her stoop near the spot where the woodpecker had been drilling. She did, and hasn't seen or heard one since!
