You'll need a pack cover for backpacking in the rain, regardless of how adamantly the manufacturer insists your backpack is waterproof. Pack covers are also good for protecting gear while you are setting up camp in a downpour.

    Thumb through a couple of reputable outdoor magazines for equipment reviews and articles about equipment purchases to find out the most recommended models and manufacturers of pack covers.
